Continuing Apple Valley’s commitment to improve the health of its residents, registration has been extended to noon on January 28 for the second annual Mayor’s Weight Loss Challenge. Last year’s event, launched by Mayor Emeritus Larry Cusack, was wildly successful as competitors walked, swam and cooked their way to incredible milestones.
While more than 200 people were quick to step on the scale during the initial weigh-in, only 61 competitors remained when the winners were revealed in June. The group of finishers had lost a combined total of 1,070 pounds. The weight loss by all challengers from the beginning totaled 1,802 pounds.
"These numbers make it evident that our residents are enthusiastic about attaining healthy goals for themselves,” said Mayor Barb Stanton. “As this year’s mayor, it is my honor to continue what Mayor Cusack began last year.”
Online registration is now open at http://www.active.com/apple-valley-ca/weight-loss/races/mayor-s-weight-loss-challenge-2016.
Initial weigh-in data will be collected by medical professionals on February 1. More details on the competition, the dates of the weigh-ins and a schedule of group activities such as “Walk with the Mayor” will be posted on www.HealthyAppleValley.org soon.
The top three people losing the highest percentage loss of their starting body weight will win up to $1,000 in cash.
There is no cost to enter, however, participants must be 18 or older and a resident of Apple Valley. Visit www.HealthyAppleValley.org. for details, or contact the Public Information Office at (760) 240-7000 x 7074.
